MONTAGE – SEMESTER 2

Photo montage combines parts of an image and words to create something new. It can give the illusion of something real. By combining meanings to create a new one photo montage can result in a conveying powerful messages to a variety of audiences.

I’m here to share my photography. Or is it photography? Because, of course, this is a photograph that you can’t take with your camera.

The Art of photography allows its photographer to access the image in ones mind and manipulate his or her tools to convert their message. By manipulating things such as saturation, colour, contrast and depth of field your camera allows you create and share that image. However with video montage the process may not end end when you press the trigger, allot of your images construction will be applied after the sill has been shot. In order to convey a feeling of realism the photo must push the boundaries of realism in the decoders mind. It’s not really what is realistic, it’s what we think looks realistic. How can you trick the mind of the decoder.

Photo montage is like an adult puzzle. It allows you to take segments of reality and attach it together with another to create an alternate reality. My favourite artists who surest the constructs of reality is Erick Johansson. If we look at his photography you can see allot of his photography is constructed after he has taken the shot. Through the use of photo-shop Erick has manipulated the  expected dimensions of a house. It has resulted in creating a new image with a new meaning.

ERICK

This photo now converts an evocative message of life. I would suggest that it expresses the the saying “my lifes been turned upside down”. by using the everyday image and symbol of the home, it is accessible to to a varieties of decoders and will also be distressing to allot. (which i believe was key to the image) As the image is distressing, it encourages discussion and thought. this photo would be impossible without the right planning.

This image shows that by combining everyday images of a house and maybe not so everyday but an upturned road, you can create something beautiful and inventive. In order to convey his message well Erick would have had to match “colour, contrast and brightness in the borders between the different images, adding photographic defects like depth of field, desaturated colors and noise, we erase the borders between the different images and make it look like one single image, despite the fact that one image can contain hundreds of layers basically.”

If I was to create an image following the ideas of Erik Johansson I would hope to create a place rather then find one as this would not limit me to the architecture that surrounds me but would allow me to mirror what is in my mind.

“The only thing that limits us is our imagination”
